Turn Your iPhone Into a Fake Windows Phone 7 With This Hack

Maybe Windows Phone 7 can gain some presence with the help of the iPhone’s hacker community.
Recently released as a public beta, a new hack transforms the interface of the iPhone to mimic the main screen of Windows Phone 7.
So gone will be the springboard UI we’ve all grown accustomed to on the iPhone and Android [...]

Instructure Launches To Root Blackboard Out Of Universities

Mozy Founder Josh Coates launches Instructure today. He's hoping to disrupt the entrenched player in the University LMS space, Blackboard, and take a big part of its $377 million or so in revenue. In 2007 EMC acquired Mozy, an online backup solution, for $76 million. Coates stayed for another year, then left. Since then he's been helping Nepalese refugees integrate into American society, and he's a big WWII buff. He purchased and restored a M18 Hellcat Tank Destroyer. You can see the restoration process here (he keeps it in his garage). And here's a video of his wife blowing the crap out of the side of a gravel pit.

Google's Android 3.0 Honeycomb for tablets revealed in new video

Major news from Google just hit at CES: Android 3.0, dubbed Honeycomb, has been revealed. It might be a leak, but the video is very well made and looks quite solid. While a new Android version is always a big deal, this leak is made all the more significant by the platform's apparent shift in focus. It's all about the tablets now.

While Android for phones is certainly not going away, the Honeycomb video features a bold statement, "Built Entirely for Tablet." And the UI really shows it, as you can see in the screencap above. Gmail looks different, but that's just one change. The whole interface underwent a radical change, to work with the tablet form factor. Other highlights from the video:
  • A 3D-looking task switcher
  • A massive software keyboard, quite reminiscent of a certain tablet that shall remain nameless (ahem)
  • Rich widgets on a roomy homescreen -- the Gmail widget looks basically like the current Gmail app
  • A strong emphasis on Google Books, including "live" widgets (scroll through books on the widget)
  • A tabbed browser, looking vaguely Chrome-like
  • A panorama-like view of YouTube with a 3D "wall" of thumbnails
  • Video-enabled Gtalk
  • Solid zoom-and-pan action with the new Maps app, including 3D buildings. This seems similar to Maps v5, but it looks so much better on a tablet.
  • Lots of futuristic-looking neon text
Exciting times indeed! Now let's see a review unit.

Google censors torrent, download terms from suggestions and Instant

It's pretty common for Google to revise its suggestion blacklist, adding in new terms that the company feels shouldn't appear. With the most recent update, you'll no longer see terms related to downloading -- terms such as torrent, RapidShare, and Megaupload. Why?

Google, indexing torrent sites and facilitating piracy, has been given plenty of flack from just about anyone with a copyright. It makes Google complicit, copyright holders argue. Fine, Google says, we won't suggest them any more when a users enters something like "Ubuntu tor."

Don't fret, searchers, you can still get your results. It just means you have to type "Futurama torrent" and hit enter instead of "Futurama to" and then pausing while Instant loads up what is probably the most commonly used pairing on Google anyway.

DonationCoder posts results of yearly NANY Event, great new applications

nany
Who doesn't like quality free software? DonationCoder.com is one of our favorite resources for great utilities. You get the software for free, but you're encouraged to donate if you use it and enjoy it.

Ever since 2007, DonationCoder has been running a yearly event called NANY, which stands for New Apps for the New Year.

This year, over 30 different entries have been made, each with its own video screencast. Here are some of the gems you can find on the NANY page:
  • Quick Cliq: A fast launcher utility that lets you create links to folders, files, programs, URLs and more. It also provides window management, clipboard manipulation and more.
  • TaskDaddy: An application for automating MS Outlook task creation. You give it a single line of input, and it turns it into a complete Outlook task without you having to open Outlook.
  • DCDisplay: A comic/magazine viewer, inspired by CDisplay.
As you can see, these are fairly purpose-specific applications, but there are many, each with its own video. Hop on over to the NANY page and see if you can find something you like!

Amazon to buy out European movie rental and streaming service LoveFilm

After merging its DVD rental business with LoveFilm in 2008, Amazon has now agreed to buy all of the remaining shares for $312 million. Pending regulatory approval, the deal will complete in the first quarter of 2011.

LoveFilm, with extensive distribution rights in the UK, Germany, Sweden, Norway and Denmark, is usually referred to as the 'Netflix of Europe,' and this purchase is obviously intended to give Amazon a strong entry into the European DVD rental and online streaming market. Amazon is hoping that LoveFilm's entrenchment will be enough to beat out Netflix, which after conquering America must surely have its sights set on Europe.

Yahoo to enable Google and Facebook sign-in on all its Web properties

The Yahoo Network of Web properties will soon let you sign in with your Facebook or Google credentials. The change will go live tomorrow, January 20, and effectively hammers the death knell for Yahoo's continuing identity crisis.

Yahoo first rolled out a federated OpenID login to Flickr back in October, but Google was the only accepted third-party sign-in. With the upcoming change, you will be able to use Facebook and Google across all of Yahoo's Web properties -- which admittedly, after signing the death warrant of a bunch of its sites, is not a whole lot. Still, it means you'll be able to customize your Yahoo search experience, comment on Flickr photos, and play with the awesome Pipes RSS remixing service, all from the comfort of your Facebook sign-in.

Incidentally, you won't be able to use your Facebook or Google details to log into "desktop or mobile clients," which presumably means Yahoo Instant Messenger.

Kongregate Arcade returns to the Android Market with some minor changes

After being removed from the Android Market for breaking the rules, the Kongregate Arcade app is back! Yet again can you enjoy easy access to the best source of Flash games on the Web.

Kongregate Arcade was originally pulled because it itself acted as a marketplace for apps -- or at least, it appeared to. In actual fact, the app was just a portal to all of the Flash games on the Kongregate site. The original app hid the browser's address bar (why is this possible?), which made it look like everything was occurring in-app.

The changes to the app make it more obvious that the app simply links to Web pages with Flash games, rather than appearing to play games from within the app. The Arcade will now also use the browser's cache to store temporary Flash files, rather than "explicitly downloading and managing games on the SD card."

A QR code to install the app is after the break.

Motorola Connected Music Player for Android is packed with awesomeness

motorola connected music player android Motorola's new Connected Music Player isn't the first leaked audio app we've seen -- but it's certainly got a leg up on the one we saw from Google. CMP goes way beyond shuffling through your music and video library, building in a ton of (predictably enough) connected features.

Let's start with the radio. CMP includes both SHOUTcast integration and the ability to tap into your phone's FM radio hardware. Soundhound support is also built-in, allowing you to identify unknown tracks anywhere you've got an Internet connection. The video tab will play your locally-stored videos and it's also got a YouTube search option -- though it's limited to finding music videos. The app's Community section leads you to TuneWiki charts, and Twitter and Facebook audio hotness courtesy of Blip.fm. It also features a cool Music Maps option, which lets you see who's listening to what -- either near your location or anywhere else in the world (my neck of the woods is unsurprisingly quiet and showed only me).

From the player's now playing screen you can Blip what you're listening to, add the track to a playlist, delete it from your library, or set it to your ringtone. Want to gently drift off to sleep as you listen to your playlist? No problem, just head to the settings screen and set up the sleep timer.

Watch Pro Bowl practice through Michael Vick's eyes -- and his ContourHD 1080p helmet cam

This weekend's NFL Pro Bowl might be one of the more useless spectacles in American sport, but since there's nothing at stake, the NFC coaches allowed Michael Vick to strap a ContourHD 1080p camera to his helmet during practice -- and the resulting few moments of footage are pretty awesome, if you're a football fan. We gave the 1080p a pretty decent review, and it certainly delivers here: you get to watch Vick break the huddle, fire off a pass to Jason Witten, hand off to Adrian Peterson, and run a play-action to Witten, all the while exchanging some friendly banter with Matt Ryan and Drew Brees. It might actually be more interesting than the Pro Bowl itself, actually. Now if only the NFL would let Aaron Rodgers wear one of these during the Packers' inevitable Super Bowl victory, we'd be happy as clams.

Update: We hate to remind everyone, but this is a gadget blog, and as such we like to keep the conversation on topic and geared towards that. Since most people can't seem to stay on topic, we're closing threads on this one.
