Effing Meteors is a cataclysmic world-destroying physics Time Waster

effingmeteors
Remember Effing Hail? Well, Effing Meteors belongs to the same genre, but with a couple of interesting twists.

You're looking at a side-view of a planet, complete with its layers of atmosphere. Above the planet, in space, there are meteors. These are hurtling towards the planet, but they're often not large enough to survive entering through the atmosphere, so they burn along the way.

Your job is to destroy the planet; or more specifically, destroy all living organisms on a given planet. You can do this because your cursor generates a gravity field. So you click one meteorite and hold; soon, that single meteorite starts attracting other meteorites in its vicinity and grows into something larger - a planetoid. Now when you smash that into the planet's surface, it does survive the atmosphere and generates quite a shock - perhaps even enough to destroy the population of that planet.

Once you destroy a planet, it simply "revolves", revealing a new planet. Each planet is different: Some planets shoot back; and there's a planet with dinosaurs that run away from you, and then flying saucers enter the picture and it all gets a bit hard to explain.

Bottom line: This is a really fun game, with innovative graphics. And sometimes you can win a level by simply doing nothing!

Apple Technician: iPod Water Damage Policy Revised

If you spill water on your iPod or drop it in the toilet, you’re out of luck: Apple’s warranty doesn’t cover water damage. The rules about what counts as water damage may have gotten more lenient recently, however.
Apple’s iPods have a Liquid Contact Indicator inside the headphone port, and if water comes in contact with [...]

Google Docs update brings Collections, Priority Sort, and file previews

Your Google Docs dashboard just got a whole lot easier to use, thanks to a slew of new features. The update includes additional filtering options and Priority Sort -- sort of the Google Docs equivalent of Gmail's Priority Inbox. Priority Sort uses a number of signals to determine which files require your immediate attention. Folders have been replaced by Collections, which are a mashup of both folders and tags. Just as you can slap multiple tags on an email message in Gmail, your Docs files can reside in several Collections.

The preview pane -- which we told you about a little while back -- is now live as well. The preview pane shows thumbnailed images as well as a file's sharing settings and which collection(s) it belongs to. One other minor -- but extremely useful -- addition is keyboard-powered multiple selections. No longer do you have to check multiple boxes. Just hold down shift or control on Windows (as you would do in Explorer) or cmd on Mac.

As with other Google updates, this is being rolled out gradually -- so you'll have to wait patiently for your Docs interface to update to enjoy the new features.

At Last, You Can Send the Yellow Pages to Hell [Rant]

At bloody last, now you can opt-out of delivery of those useless volumes of bound dead trees and CO2 known as the Yellow Pages. I would rather kill them all, but this is a step in the right direction. More »

CityVille Adds 20 New Levels To Please 100 Million Players

Zynga's CityVille hit 100 million monthly players - making it the largest Facebook application ever - just a little over a month after launching in December 2010. We've noted that Facebook execs (including Mark Zuckerberg), Google execs and others are playing, and playing long enough that it doesn't just look like they're sniffing around. Kleiner Perkins partner and former Chief Creative Officer of Electronic Arts Bing Gordon maxed out at level 60 early on. Zynga added more levels today, though. The new maximum is 80 levels, and Gordon surged to level 67.

Video: Literally Eric Schmidt, Literally

All great CEOs have presentation secrets. Apple CEO Steve Jobs says "boom!" a lot ? and other superlatives. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer loves to repeat certain words three times ? often while clapping his hands. But what about departing Google CEO Eric Schmidt? What's his secret? It's the use of the word "literally", literally.
