How Space Jam?s Website Went Viral. Space Jam?s 1996 Website, That Is.

A couple of days ago Reddit user Jeff Ubelhor was talking to his friends about something or other and Space Jam, the movie starring Bugs Bunny and Michael Jordan, came up (he swears they weren't stoned). They checked on the website and realized that it hadn't been touched since 1996. "From there I decided to post it on Reddit," says Ubelhor "Because I thought it was hilarious, not only the design, but just how different Internet marketing was 14 years ago."

SurfCube browser for Windows Phone 7 sports a slick 3D cube interface

At $1.99 in the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace, SurfCube is hard to pass up. The app takes the stock WP7 browser and builds a 3D cube interface around it. The main browser window is front and center and you can shake or flick to rotate the cube and display SurfCube's other screens -- like settings, tabs, and favorites. SurfCube can also be set to run under your lockscreen, which makes it easier to pick up where you left off.

Take the jump to see SurfCube in action!

Verify by Zurb lets you perform real-world usability testing for your website

verify
For Web developers, designers and managers, each design change involves a ton of small and large decisions. What color scheme should we go with? Should this element be larger or smaller? What will people remember once they glance at my page?

More often then not, we sort of wing this part of the job. We may ask a couple of people we know, but most small-time developers and internal product teams tend to act on gut instinct. It's not because people don't care, but because it's often difficult to gather actual data. You can use Google Analytics for some things (A/B testing for conversion rates), but Analytics data won't tell you what people remember after looking at your page, or if a certain timestamp format is more or less friendly for your comment threads.

We've covered a couple of applications by Zurb before, and now they've released a new one, aimed at providing just this sort of data to product teams. It's called Verify, and it basically lets you create a set of tests based on your Web page, or mock-ups of possible versions of the page, and then send them out to customers or large groups of internal users.

The tests are fun: In one test, you get a few seconds to look at the page, and then you're asked what you remember (like previously-covered Clue). Other tests produce a heat-map of clicks: People are asked something like "Where would you click to learn more about us?" and then you see what they do.

Verify isn't free, but for what it does, it seems quite affordable (starting at $9/month). I've put up a short video showcasing it after the jump.

Adblock Plus for Chrome coming soon

AdBlock Plus
Adblock is already available for Chrome, and is working very well for us so far. But now Adblock Plus, of Firefox fame, may be joining making the jump to Google's browser platform.

AdBlock Plus' developer, Wladimir Palant, has had lots of time to convert the extension; after all, Chrome isn't exactly new. But so far, Palant has been reluctant to do the porting, due to the amount of work required and Chrome's limited blocking capabilities. Times have changed however, as according to TechCrunch, Adblock Plus is on its way. It won't be a complete re-write apparently, but based on an existing extension called AdThwart.

From an end user's point of view, having Adblock Plus for Chrome might not make a huge difference. After all, the existing options for Chrome do get the job done. But when you step back and look at the big picture, this is one more indication of the rapid rise of Chrome as a browser platform, and now, an OS.

NVIDIA NUANCE COMMUNICATIONS

O Canada! World?s Most Web Connected Land

According to a recent comScore report, Canada has beaten out the US, the UK, France, and everyone else in the world in various metrics relating to broadband and internet use. While the conspicuous absence of the likes of Sweden, a perennial leader in these categories, fills me with suspicion, the numbers are still fun, and slightly surprising. One statistic calculated to both please and terrify is that, by comScore's measurements, just over half the population of Canada is on Facebook. That amounts to about 16 million people — a drop in the bucket with Facebook's user base — but it's the proportion that matters. US usage is around 40% by some estimates, which is of course significant, but it's fun that Canada has passed us up in this race. I'm guessing it has something to do with the weather up there.

LucidLogix virtualization tech enables AMD and NVIDIA GPUs to play together with Sandy Bridge

It's baaack. We've gone well over half a year without hearing a peep from black magic makers LucidLogix, but here on the doorstep of CES 2011, the company has resurfaced just in time to ride on the coattails of Intel's forthcoming Sandy Bridge platform. Sandy is expected to take over CES when companies start to introduce new PCs in just a few days, and thanks to Lucid's virtualization software, we wouldn't be surprised if a few are served with NVIDIA and AMD GPUs. This here technology enables the two to play nice, making the outlandish fantasy of using a multi-GPU, multi-vendor setup a reality. DirectX 11 is also supported, with the only real requirement being to "connect the display screen directly to the motherboard's Sandy Bridge display output." We'll be taking a closer look at the peacemaker once we land in Vegas, but for now, go ahead and prepare yourself for a beta version of 'Virtu' -- it'll hit at some point next month.

Google sends Android astronauts into space

Android in Space
Google, with the aid of some weather balloons and Nexus S handsets, has successfully launched the Android OS into the stratosphere, all in the name of science.

Well, ostensibly in the same of science. Yes, there were some interesting findings -- the Nexus S only works below 60,000 ft (18km) and above -50C -- but really it was all about the photos and videos. There's a Picasa album with a bunch of photos, both of the set up and from space, and there are two videos (both after the break).

Of course, Android is only the second smartphone OS to make it into space; iOS was first, way back in October.

Yes, I know 100,000 ft isn't quite 'space', but it's still pretty damn high.

China tightens hold on rare earth exports, markets soar

If you own a flat screen TV, a hybrid, a PC, or any number of cell phones, chances are you own a small but very sought after piece of China. The country accounts for 97 percent of the world's rare earth production, which is used in all manner of gadgets, and it recently announced plans to scale back exports by 10 percent in 2011. The move probably won't have a big impact on the average consumer, but it's certainly gained a lot of attention on the world market: the US threatened action in the World Trade Organization, stocks for rare earth mining companies spiked significantly, and Sony Corp. vowed to decrease its dependence on the minerals. It's actually not like the rest of the world is lacking for rare earth resources -- American's are actually sitting on 13 million metric tons of the stuff, which companies in the US and Canada are making a mad dash to mine. Trouble is, just getting the stuff out of the ground isn't enough -- China still has a monopoly on rare earth processing, and US companies are reluctant to spend the eight years and minimum $500 million necessary to construct a chemical separation plant. So what does all this mean for you? Well, not a whole lot, unless you happen to be China's Minister of Commerce, in which case you should probably stop surfing the web and get back to work.

Mozilla's P2PU 'School of Webcraft' gearing up for another semester of nerdy teaching

p2pu
It turns out Barney isn't the only dinosaur interested in education -- Mozilla (with its own Dinosaur) is ramping up the course count in its online education program, delivered via P2PU. 'The School of Webcraft' is basically a free online learning community with structured courses about a range of Web-related subjects, from HTML5, through JavaScript, all the way to social media management and SEO. Each class is between six to ten weeks long, with the Mozilla-supported program offering 15 classes last term. This coming semester, they're upping their efforts and running a full 30 courses.

Each class is led by an actual human being, and participation is required -- it's not just a bunch of videos you have to watch. There's a limited number of places available per class, and you have to actually do homework. Not all classes are for beginners either; some are for advanced coders, too. But registration isn't available just yet - it begins Jan 8, and there's a mailing list you can join to be alerted when registration opens.

If you're serious about your Web-related education, we suggest you sign up for the mailing list -- these courses tend to fill up quite quickly. Head on over to the School of Webcraft site for more information.

Sharp Galapagos media tablets will bring 3G and EPUB content to US e-reader market in 2011

We like a bit of ambition around these parts and Sharp's plans for entering the US e-reader battlefield reek of the stuff. The Galapagos tablets that recently enjoyed their Japanese debut are going to be retooled, according to the Mainichi Daily News, to include new 3G radios for the internet-addicted US consumer, while the primary content format will also be switched from the proprietary XMDF in Japan to the almost universally compatible EPUB. Content partnerships are said to be brewing as we type, because, quite naturally, Sharp intends to have its own e-bookstore for Americans as well. After the Yanks, the company's said to be looking into bringing its 5.5- and 10.8-inch tablets to China, India, and Brazil. Highly ambitious indeed.

Barnes & Noble Nook trademark applications offer speculation fodder aplenty

So you're Barnes & Noble and you have a successful product like the Nook -- what do you do? Trademark the heck out of the name, of course. As PocketNow has noted, the company's filed a number of Nook-related trademark applications over the past few months, which may offer some hints of future Nook hardware, software, or both. That unsurprisingly includes an application for "Nook2," which was first filed back in June, as well one for the name "Nook Smart" (possibly related to the existing Nook Study education platform?), and one for the impossibly catchy "Nook Cook." Unfortunately, it's not clear which (if any) of those might actually be the name of a new Nook device -- there's also a trademark application for "Nook Kids" with a description similar to "Nook2," for instance, but it may well just be for the company's Nook Kids store and iPad app. The most recent of all the filings is one for "Nooksellers," which appears to be for a combination in-store kiosk and online service that would offer personalized recommendations and various social networking tie-ins. Of course, there's nothing more than the trademark applications to go on at the moment, but it does certainly seem clear that the Nook name is here to stay.

Adblock Plus for Chrome now available

We told you it was coming soon, but we didn't know precisely how soon: Wadlimir Palant has already pushed the first beta version of Adblock Plus for Google Chrome. It was just four days ago that TechCrunch reported that Palant had changed his mind about never releasing a Chrome port -- citing reasons like not wanting to maintain two unrelated projects and the availability of capable alternatives like AdThwart.

That's all changed, however, and AdThwart has become the foundation of Adblock Plus for Chrome. The first release includes improved filters, updated code to bring the extension more inline with its Firefox cousin, and better XHTML support.

Those of you who already had AdThwart installed should be automatically updated, and new users can install ABP from the Chrome Extensions Gallery.

Stickpecker: Chopsticks You Can Crack Apart Over and Over Again

To the Japanese, the crack of splitting apart a pair of chopsticks is apparently as satisfying as the splitting the membrane-like seal on a jar of instant coffee is to us. More, it signifies the start of a meal, even if that meal is the kind eaten with disposable, takeaway cutlery.

XBMC 10.0 released with new add-on system and a ton of improvements

xbmc
XBMC is a fantastic media center application, and while it works well for dedicated HTPCs, it also plays nice on desktop computers, alongside your other software. But now XBMC has hit the version 10.0 milestone with a plethora of changes and improvements. Here's a small sample of the goodies you can look forward to in 10.0:

  • Add-on support: The biggest change -- add-ons can now be browsed, installed, and updated from within XBMC itself, making it easy to change XBMC's look-and-feel or give it new functionality.
  • WebM/VP8 codecs: You can now watch videos encoded using Google's latest open-source video format right from within XBMC.
  • Hardware acceleration added for Windows Vista and Windows 7.
  • Linux improvement: VDAPU support improved and VAAPI support added.
There's a comprehensive changelog with much more, but why not just take the new, free, XBMC for a spin?

Porsche promises to unveil 'new model' in Detroit, could it be the 918 Spyder plug-in?

Porsche promises to unveil 'new model' in Detroit, could it be the 918 Spyder plug-in?
Maybe this is wishful thinking and maybe we're optimists, but maybe, just maybe, Porsche could be ready to unveil to the world the final version of its supremely hot hybrid. We already know the company has given the 918 Spyder plug-in hybrid a green light for a run down assembly lines, a legitimate supercar with a 700+ horsepower on tap despite achieving near 80mpg. But, we don't know the when nor the all-important how much. With Porsche promising to give "a new model its world debut" at the North American International Auto Show we can't help but hope that this is it. Want to be the first to find out? When the time comes you can watch the unveil yourself, live streamed at www.porsche.com/detroit.

Update: Marco wrote in to let us know the spoil-sports at Autobild are indicating this will be just the relatively plain 918, neither a spyder nor a hybrid. We'll just have to wait a few weeks to see.
